A message from Lisa Brown, Director of Children’s Ministry….
It’s that time of year again and I am very excited to begin a new year of Sunday School!
A little (probably too much!) information about our Sunday School program…
All classes begin at 9:30 a.m., most Sundays, and there are programs for children in pre-school through high school.
Confirmation class begins for 7th graders who will then make their Confirmation during their 8th grade year. Youth new to our congregation who are close in age may join a Confirmation class as well.
Our curriculum is Augsburg Fortress’ Spark! – each child is given weekly learner leaflets and has access to a Story Bible or Youth Bible as part of their classroom work.
Sunday School begins for children aged 3 1/2, who are potty trained and in preschool. If you’ve got a preschooler who is ready to attend independently, great. If they are still a little hesitant, please feel welcome to accompany them to class. And if they just aren’t ready to separate – that’s fine too! You might consider simply attending Children’s Chapel with them until they are ready to join a class. Or hang out at coffee hour while they run around and eat donuts. Better to wait and have them really enjoy their Sunday School experience than have it be unpleasant!
Children in preschool through second grade meet in classrooms on the ground floor of our building (in the preschool rooms).
Their curriculum for the year tells the story of the people of God, starting with Creation, moving toward the birth of Christ (which corresponds with our celebration of Christmas) to His death and resurrection (corresponding, of course, to our celebration of Easter).
Preschoolers through 2nd grade also attend Children’s Chapel during the last 20 minutes of their class. The chapel is also on the ground floor of the building and time there is filled with love, laughter and music. It is truly a special experience!
Children in 3rd through 5th grade meet on the third floor of the building, on the same level as our worship space.
Youth in 6th through high school meet in various rooms on the second floor.
The curriculum for children and youth in 3rd through 6th grade is Lectionary-based, meaning that it follows the readings that we are using in church that week. Each reading is considered from an age-appropriate perspective, and it helps kids connect to what they are hearing in church.
Confirmation Class in 7th and 8th grade uses the "I Will with God’s Help" curriculum that helps youth understand the promises that were made for them at Baptism and prepares them to make those promises for themselves at Confirmation.
Youth Forum is an open discussion for high school students, focusing on current events through the lens of faith.
Children are invited to join Sunday School at any time throughout the program year. Simply request a registration form from the classroom teacher or from Lisa Brown.
Please let me know how your kids are responding to Sunday School, worship or St. Paul’s in general at lcbrown@stpaulspgh.org. I want each child to know that they are an integral and valued member of our parish community. If you have any suggestions, questions or ideas on how we can create a better experience for your child or all of our children, please let me know!
Join us, we’re going to have a GREAT year!
