This Week at St. Paul’s

SATURDAY EVENING
HONORING SANDY & DICK RITCHIE

Celebration Dinner

Sandy and Dick Ritchie are going to be leaving us soon to move to Fort Wayne, Indiana to be close to their family. We will have a celebratory dinner honoring Sandy and Dick on Saturday, May 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. This evening of great food (John Sozansky’s famous meatballs and other Italian delicacies), entertainment, and tributes will be a fitting celebration of Sandy and Dick’s 20 years of service at St. Paul’s. Proceeds will benefit the Outreach ministries of the parish. Please RSVP to Dorothy (dconway@stpaulspgh.org, 412-531-7153, x10) by tomorrow (Friday), at the end of the day.

ST. PAUL’S & ST. DAVID’S GARDEN

St Paul’s/St. David’s Garden Update

This Saturday, May 18, is the planting day for the St. Paul’s/St. David’s Garden.  This project, which is being coordinated by parishioner Jack Brownfield as his Eagle Scout Project, will provide fresh produce to families who are served by the South Hills Interfaith Ministries Food Bank. We will be working from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., all help is welcomed! Please bring gardening tools, such as shovels, spades and hoes. Lunch will be provided. If the weather looks iffy or you have any questions, please contact Jack at 412 831-9568 or pugpup1@verizon.net. The garden is located at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 905 E. McMurray Rd. Thank you!

SPECIAL THANKS

Junior Warden Thank You!

I want to thank everyone who helped last Saturday for Spring Cleanup. Even though the weather did not cooperate, we had a great turnout and accomplished quite a bit. Outside there was the pruning of trees and plants, weeding,  general grounds cleanup, as well as the spreading of over 10 yards of mulch. Inside the kitchen, there was the cleaning of the stove, shelves, as well as cleaning out the kitchen closet. This was quite a task that revealed to everyone involved that apparently we have enough sugar, Sweet and Low, to last for years to come. In the church itself, parishioners cleaned all the pews, woodwork and base boards by hand with cleaner and lots of "elbow grease". All in all it was a great day of work and fellowship.

Music Notes

Happy Birthday to the Church of Christ (that’s us), the "bride" of Christ (Like the murmur of the dove’s song, hymn 513) strengthened by the comforting love of the Holy Spirit (offertory anthem, Ireland’s, Greater love hath no man), and on this day, a primary feast day in the Christian Calendar (Hail Thee Festival day, hymn 225). In other words, it is Pentecost Sunday. Our music reflects its many themes including the gift of the Holy Spirit, which sustains the church in its mission. Brian Sable conducts the handbell choir in their prelude entitled, Intrada. We welcome four brass players from Pittsburgh Jazz Band, Jazz Conspiracy- Trim Brutcher and Kyle Simpson, trumpets; and, Emmett Goods and Tim Speicher, trombones. All this great music helps us to joyfully celebrate the birthday of the church.

Finally, Violinist/violist Matt Pickart and pianist Ellen Fast will be presenting a special recital of chamber music at St. Paul’s on Sunday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m. Included on the program are several sets of vocal pieces transcribed for string instrument and piano, including Manuel de Falla’s "Suite populaire espagnole" and Ralph Vaughan Williams’s "Six Studies in English Folksong." They will also play the rhythmically virtuosic "Three American Pieces" by Lukas Foss, a sonata by Mozart, and more. A $10.00 donation will be asked at the door.
