Sacred Jazz

Doug and Tommy Starr presented this short sacred jazz music concert featuring the music of Bill Evans and John Coltrane. We begin with an improvisation of the Passiontide hymn,O Sacred Head Now Wounded followed by Evans’ “Peace Piece” and two movements from Coltrane’s transformative,A Love Supreme, a work that he called,my gift to God. The presentation begins with introductory remarks and is 28 minutes in length. You can re-watch the concert here.

As a follow-up to their Holy Week Sacred Jazz music concert, Doug present more details about this distinctive jazz genre. His blog series is about his 47 years as a church musician and the time period where jazz revealed its spirituality in his professional life. A brief narration is followed by Tommy and Doug’s performance of two movements from John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” (1964) The duration is 19:52. You can view it here.

Readings and Musical Reflections on the Stations of the Cross Throughout the season of Lent, our music ministry will engage in a collaborative effort to reflect on the Stations of the Cross. Beginning on Friday, February 19th, look for two or three video reflections per week, released on our St. Paul’s YouTube channel and accessible through our Facebook page. Each video will display a lingering visual shot of the station (those beautifully carved, acquired from the Holy Land, and currently mounted in the church). Superimposed on the visual shot will be a narration of the station, immediately followed by a pre-recorded musical performance that is related to that station’s narrative. If you’d like to record a reading or musical reflection for this project, please contact Doug Starr ([email protected]) or Christin Cooper ([email protected]).

You can watch the videos here.
