On Sunday- Happy Birthday to the Church of Christ (that is all of us), the “bride” of Christ (we sing various settings of Veni Sancte and Veni Creator Spiritus) strengthened by the comforting love of the Holy Spirit (Come down o love divine, our communion hymn), and on this day, a primary feast day in the Christian Calendar (Hail Thee Festival day, our processional hymn 225). In other words, it is Pentecost Sunday. Our music reflects its many themes.
In particular at 10:45 am, we will use a setting the Sequence for Pentecost, Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit, send forth the heavenly radiance of your light) set as a Taize song and sung by the choir at the Communion. These ancient Latin texts have strengthened Pentecost worship for centuries and it is such a privilege to worship in a tradition that still senses their profound spiritual expression.
On Sunday morning we welcome our guest musician and cellist, Olga Redkina. She will play works by Albinoni and Rakhmaninov at the prelude. Olga was trained as cellist at the Kazan Music School in her Russian Homeland. Now a Pittsburgh resident, Olga gives private lessons out of her private and on-line Virtual studio. She plays in several different ensembles including the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Altoona Symphony Orchestra, and Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra. This is her second performance at St. Paul’s and later this month she is offering a cello summer camp at St. Paul’s on Thursday June 15 through Saturday June 17. She will also give a solo recital on Wednesday night June 14th at 6:30 pm in the church. All are welcome and a free-will offering will be taken. More about Olga can be found at her website: https://www.olgaredkina.com
