Children and Youth Happenings February and March 2018
This is fairly long because, well, it’s two months-worth of activities for children, youth, and families. Please take a few minutes to look at what is going on and when, and read the blurbs to find out more information about different activities.
Lent begins February 14th with Ash Wednesday services. This year we are doing a couple of special things for the children and youth during Lent. First, we will be doing the Easter Baskets for Refugees, similar to what we did last year, because there is still such a need here in the South Hills and our community is perfectly positioned to meet that need.
Second, we will be doing “Lent in a Bag”. Have you ever heard of it? It is similar to an Advent Calendar during Advent. Each week of Lent, in Sunday School, the classes will be using their own classroom Lent in a Bag to do a devotion before getting started on their lessons-- and the first Sunday of Lent, we will be making these bags in Sunday School. You can do your own devotions at home each week, to prepare for Holy Week and Easter.
Here’s what is happening in February and March:
February 4th, 9:45am-- regular Sunday School
February 4th, 8:45am and 10:45am-- Scout Sunday and Souper Bowl Sunday
Scout Sunday: Calling all scouts-- girl scouts and boy scouts, venturers, sea scouts-- current and former, because we need you ALL to celebrate Scout Sunday! Wear your uniform to church and help us recognize the importance of these organizations! Bring a canned or boxed non-perishable good to help our community food banks!
Souper Bowl of Caring: Before going to your Super Bowl party (I know, the Steelers aren't playing-- maybe next year!), come to church and participate in the SOUPER Bowl of Caring! The 7th and 8th grade confirmation students will be stationed with big soup pots at each entrance to the church. They are collecting for the South Hills Interfaith Movement food pantry.Help us serve the hungry in our own community!
February 4th, 3pm to 4pm-- Family Yoga in the undercroft for all ages and generations who are interested.
Saturday, February 10th, 9am to 12pm-- Pastoral Care Summit
This summit is open to anyone who wants to learn how we can better care for each other and other members of our community. If you are interested in attending, please speak to Noah or Arlene Dorow. Please RSVP to Dorothy at 412-531-7153.
February 11th, 9:45am--: COMBINED WORSHIP at 9:45am, followed by the Annual Meeting and brunch to begin at 11am.
There is no Sunday School that day but there WILL be an activity of epically fun proportions for the kids to be held in the “Big Room” on the ground level, in the nursery school. All parents-- we need you at this annual meeting. Please plan to attend-- your kids will thank you, too.
February 11th, 3pm to 4pm-- Family Yoga in the undercroft for all ages and generations who are interested.
February 13th, 5:30pm to 7:30pm-- Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, and Ash Making for the 6th Grade Sunday School class.
Hosted by the 7th grade Confirmation class, this is a terrific pancake dinner for all households in our parish-- 6th graders, we have something new for you. Noah needs you help burning the palms from last Palm Sunday to make ashes for Ash Wednesday!
February 14th, 11:40am and 5:30pm-- Children’s Ash Wednesday Services
After the success of last year’s Children’s Good Friday service, we’ve decided to add two Children’s Ash Wednesday services this year. We will meet in the church chapel for a short, child-friendly service and all will receive ashes who want them.
February 18th, 9:45am-- Regular Sunday School. Don’t miss this Sunday-- it’s the first Sunday of Lent and all classes will be making “Lent in a Bag”, which is sort of like an Advent wreath for Lent. Each week there is a devotion that we’ll do in the Sunday School classes, and you will have the same materials and devotions to do at home each week. Anything that connects you to God is a terrific Lenten practice, and this one is perfect for families. Don’t miss Lent in a Bag!!
February 18th, 3pm to 4pm-- Family Yoga for all ages and generations who are interested.
February 23rd, 5pm to 7pm-- It’s the first Fish Fry of Lent for 2018! We hope to see you at this fun dinner, hosted by the ever popular Squid Squad!

March 17th, 10am-- Passion Play Rehearsal in the church.
Do you LOVE the Christmas Pageant? Guess what-- we are starting a new St. Paul’s tradition. We will be doing a Passion Play on Palm Sunday. We need actors of all ages and life situations to make this play everything it should be…..the script is being written as a type. This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for the kids of St. Paul’s to interact with scripture during Holy Week-- something that seems to have been missing in past years. I’m really looking forward to this one!
March 18th, 9:45am-- regular Sunday School for pre-K through 5th grade. Grades 6, 7, 8, and youth forum will make palm crosses in the Big Room. If you don’t know how to make these, there will be plenty of experts on hand to teach you how! This is another one of my favorite St. Paul’s traditions-- don’t miss it!
March 18th, 3pm to 4pm-- Family Yoga for all ages and generations who are interested
March 24th, 10am-- Passion Play Rehearsal in the church. Make sure you attend at least one of these rehearsals, so that we are all on the same page when Palm Sunday rolls around!
March 25th, 9:45am-- COMBINED PALM SUNDAY WORSHIP WITH THE PASSION PLAY!
Plan to arrive at church in costume at 9:15am so that we can be ready to go at 9:45am.
March 29th, 7:30pm to March 30th, 12pm-- Youth Lock-In and Prayer Vigil.
More information to come-- youth in middle and high school are invited to come to a lock-in during the all night prayer vigil of Holy Week.
March 30th, 4pm-- Children’s Good Friday Service
This is a perfect “stations of the cross” service for children-- if you did not attend last year, plan to attend this year. We will roll dice, rip purple cloth, carry a cross, and nail our sins to the big cross in church. It’s a wonderful new tradition for St. Paul’s!

Blessings to All,
