St. Paul’s Small Groups: The Difficult Words of Jesus
Small Groups begin the week of April 16th.
Jesus provided his disciples teachings for how to follow Torah, God’s word; he told them parables to help them discern questions of ethics and of human nature; he offered them beatitudes for comfort and encouragement. But sometimes Jesus spoke words that followers then and now have found difficult. He instructs disciples to hate members of their own families (Luke 14:26), to act as if they were slaves (Matthew 20:27), and to sell their belongings and give to the poor (Luke 18:22). He restricts his mission (Matthew 10:6); he speaks of damnation (Matthew 8:12); he calls Jews the devil’s children (John 8:44).
In The Difficult Words of Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine shows how these difficult teachings would have sounded to the people who first heard them, how have they been understood over time, and how we might interpret them in the context of the Gospel of love and reconciliation.
Groups start the week of April16th and run until Pentecost. You can read along on your own or join one of our Small Groups.

Life of the Beloved
A 5-week Group Spiritual Direction Program via Zoom
When: Zoom meetings will be Monday evenings, April 17 and 24, May 1, 8 and 15, at 5-6pm EST.
The resurrection has been accomplished! Lenten studies have ended, and you may be asking, “Is that it? Do I just coast from here until Advent?” Certainly not!
The sacrifice of the cross is the beginning call of the Beloved. In this short series, we’ll be reading Henri Nouwen’s book “Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World.” As Nouwen says, “The great spiritual call of the Beloved is to pull their brokenness away from the shadow of the curse and put it under the light of the blessing.” Our world and ourselves live out the reality of that brokenness daily. How do we face it?
Each week we’ll focus on one chapter, having read it, and in a quiet, meditative time, prayed about the reading and then journaled our thoughts and reactions to each – Loved, Chosen, Blessed, Broken, and Given. At meeting time, we’ll share our reflections (as we so desire) and always in a covenant of confidence.
Registration: You can register for this program by emailing Jill Gordon. Confirmation of your registration will be sent to you with any additional details, including the Zoom link. Registration deadline is Sunday, April 16, 2023. Please order your book in time to read selection prior to our first meeting.
Offering: The donation for this program is $25 and is tax deductible. You can donate by credit card or check. By check, please make payable to WVIS and mail it to 1601 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV 25311 with the name of the program in the memo line. If you wish to register online, you can click HERE and be taken to the WVIS Tithe.ly Donation page. Click the Give button, then choose “Life of the Beloved”0

The more languages we can feature, the better the reading will be – so even if you haven’t practiced in a while, or are a new learner, please reach out!
