EfM was begun by Rev. Charles Winters in 1975 as a way for baptized Christians to practice community in and through small group study, prayer, reflection and worship. You could think of it as “seminary for the rest of us.” EfM is a 4 year program, meeting once a week (with summers off), with each gathering lasting between 2-3 hours. Topics range from Scripture (Years 1 and 2), Church History (Year 3), and Ethics and other Contemporary Issues (Year 4). Although it is rigorous, and the commitment is substantial, know that one doesn't have to commit to all 4 years on the front end - just one year at a time is all you would be on board for.
Although it is called education for ministry, this is not preparation for the priesthood. Rather, EfM offers a unique opportunity for Christians to dive deeper into their faith so that they might better live out, share, and enjoy the riches of our Christian story within their daily lives and work. Have you ever wondered what the heck the Old Testament is about, and why it feels so different than the New? Have you ever wondered where the notion of “Purgatory” originates, or if the apple (was it even an apple?) in the Garden of Eden might have any wisdom for our Apple-product society? If these sorts of questions pique your interest, EfM might just be for you.
