Adult Forum: The Episcopal Church and the American Revolution

November 10 @ 9:45 am

In the Undercroft

Discontent in American colonists against England fomented a seven-year-long Revolutionary War culminating with independence and the formation of a new nation, the United States of America. Three-quarters of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Anglicans, the institutional church of the nation they were, at risk of treason, separating from. The Church of England had parishes in colonial America in part supported with tax revenues. These were under the authority of the Bishop of London; there were no Bishops in the colonies. Many of the immigrants to the colonies were getting away from religious persecution including the Quakers and others who were escaping the Anglican Church. Nothing boded well for the survival of the Anglican churches in America. Yet these parishes were reorganized as the Episcopal Church which continues today as a large mainstream Christian denomination. Part of the reason may be that the church was organized using democratic principles embodied in the government of the new nation. Join us for this presentation offered by parishioner Geoff Hurd.
