Adult Forums
April 7 – Mental Health First Aid
Most of us would know how to respond if someone were having a heart attack, we might start CPR or call 911. For many of us, it is a greater challenge when we observe someone having a panic attack or suspect a colleague might be abusing alcohol. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based practice that equips the everyday citizen with the tools and skills needed when someone is struggling with a behavioral health concern. Please join us on April 7, 2024, to learn more about this important subject and how you can help. This forum will be led by parishioner Anita Kinsley who is a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor.
April 14 – Fakhriya Hashemi speaks about Afghanistan
Hear from Fakhriya Hashemi about her experiences before, during, and after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. Fakhriya, her husband Yousuf, and children now live in Mt. Lebanon. Hear about the challenges and successes of this transition to American life and how St. Paul’s can continue to support new families coming from Afghanistan to the Pittsburgh area.
April 21: Journey Through the Acts of the Apostles
Join the Rev. Erin Morey to learn about this action – packed book of the Bible. Come hear about shipwrecks, drive-through baptisms, and the time St. Paul’s preaching was so boring, a guy actually died.
April 28: Liminal Space
During life transitions, we often find ourselves in what is known as “liminal space” which is the middle of a transition process. During this Adult Forum, you will be invited to participate in exploring creative guides from several theorists that are intended as an aid to understand and work through the transition process. The guides are meant to help navigate through middle space from endings to new shared healthy beginnings. This Adult Forum will be presented by Jerry Rutledge. Jerry is a parishioner at St. Paul’s on the Vestry Spiritual Growth Commission and Associate Spiritual Director Intern at the West Virginia Institute for Spirituality (WVIS).
May 5 – Writing Your Life
On May 5th, join Jill Gordon and Kathy Bashaar at 9:45 in the Undercroft for a mini version of their Write Your Life class. Writing prompts will be offered, and then shared (if desired) in small groups. Bring your own pen and tablet or device. No writing skill necessary; just a desire to tell stories from your own life, to share with others or just for your own satisfaction.
May 12 – Army Chaplaincy
1LT Theodore Somes, III will present a forum about his experiences as a Chaplain Candidate in the Army Reserve and the role and history of military chaplains in the armed forces.

Adult Mental Health First Aid Training
Thursday, April 11, 9am to 5pm in the Conference Room
Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use problems can be difficult to detect. Friends and family members may find it hard to know when and how to step in. As a result, those in need of mental health services often do not receive care until it is too late. Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. The training will be taught by parishioner Anita Kinsley, who is a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor. Training materials will be provided by St. Paul’s.
Please bring a bag lunch.
The deadline to register is Thursday, April 4.For class registration, or additional information, contact Anita Kinsley [email protected] or 215-842-1678
